J. Carnes & Son Roofing is a GAF Master Elite Weather Stopper Roofing Contractor. This means we are a member of a group that is comprised of fewer than 3% of roofing contractors nationwide. Even with the North East being flooded with hundreds of roofing contractors we are the only company on the Seacoast with this elite status. Every year contractors attempt to enter this Master Elite program and are denied because they don’t meet the strict criteria established by GAF.
As a GAF Weather Stopper Roofing Contractor, we provide extensive warranty protection that most other contractors cannot. With the Weather Stopper Roofing System and one of our Deluxe GAF warranties, you can rest assured that you’re not only protected by the J Carnes & Son Roofing’s name and reputation, but the country’s largest and oldest roofing manufacturer. Additionally, GAF Weather Stopper Roofing System is the only roofing system backed by the Good Housekeeping Seal: further assurance that GAF will stand behind your new roof. As of January 1st, 2011 all GAF laminated asphalt roofing shingles are covered under a limited lifetime warranty.
Illustration of roofing terms and components

The following is a typical scope of installation for a J. Carnes & Son asphalt roof system:
Cover entire house with tarps for protection
Re-roofing is a very messy project, especially when removing multiple layers of shingles. We take all the necessary precautions in protecting your property with the use of heavy duty tarps draped along the entire length of your house from top to bottom. Due to uncontrollable dust, it is recommended that customers cover or remove any valuables located in attic areas.
Strip all roof areas down to bare roof boards and remove all nails
Going over an existing roof is not recommended. This process does not give you the ability to properly inspect roof decks or flashings for damage. We will replace any damaged sheathing or flashing we come across during our deck inspection.
Our chimneys are known to be the best in the business! We thoroughly clean the chimney of any old tar and caulk and remove existing flashings. We then grind out all necessary mortar joints before installing brand new lead flashing. All joints and visible cracks are sealed with mortar. We do not use caulk to attach flashings to brick. Please note, TAR IS NOT ACCEPTABLE FLASHING! Any roofer who uses tar to tie into penetrations is inexperienced and will undoubtedly install a roof system that will fail.
Ice and Water Shield leak barrier
Ice and Water Shield or Bituthene is a membrane that works primarily as a leak and ice dam barrier. It is the first component installed on your new roof system. This product will help protect your roof deck in case of water damming in your gutters, wind driven rain, and, damaging ice dams. We install this product covering at least the first 6’ of the leading edge of the roof deck. We also wrap all roof penetrations, including, but not limited to: chimneys, stove pipes, plumbing pipes and skylights.
Premium Breathable Roof Deck Underlayment
Underlayment is one of the most important elements when installing a roof system. Traditionally known felt paper has been proven to rot or become brittle before shingles can reach there useful life. This product is out dated and not recommended. To provide a critical extra layer of protection between your shingles and your roof deck we install premium breathable synthetic underlayments. These products work as a second form of protection by preventing wind-driven rain from infiltrating under your shingles and causing damage to your roof structure or to the inside of your home. In addition, a premium roof deck underlayment will allow moisture from inside your attic to escape.
Plumbing Flashing
We install brand new plumbing flashing on every roof we do. We use an aluminum flashing boot with a rubber collar.
Aluminum Drip Edge
We use only top of the line 8 inch aluminum drip edge around the entire perimeter of all roofs. Drip edge prevents water from running down behind the trim of your home. Watch out for companies who try and cut cost with a less performing 5 inch drip edge. Customers can choose between a milled finish, white, brown or black.
Starter Strips
Precut starter strips are one of the most overlooked parts of a roofing system. Most roofers try and reduce cost by fabricating starter strips out of shingle scraps. This method does not guarantee a glue line at the leading edges of your roof. We use only precut starter strips that are installed around the entire perimeter of your roof (eaves and rakes). This installation increases your wind coverage on both the System Plus and Golden Pledge Warranties.
Asphalt Shingles
Almost every steep slope residential roof system installed in the northeast involves asphalt shingles. Even with an array of premium shingle styles available, nowadays, most homeowners opt for the best bang for their buck and choose a standard 30yr architectural shingle. Despite the fact that we highly recommend and primarily install GAF roofing products, we do offer installations with warranties using any asphalt shingle available on the market.
Storm Nailing or Hurricane Nailing
Manufacturers and most building codes only require 4 nails per shingle. To maximize wind warranties and overall protection we attach every shingle with
no less than 6 nails.
Proper ventilation is required to protect your roof from premature deterioration. Heat and moisture builds up in attic areas causing mold, mildew, rot and even exterior ice dams to say the least. Properly installed ridge vents or roof vents allow heat and condensation to escape at the most effective location – the ridge. Ventilation is code and is mandatory on every roof system we install.
Hip and Ridge Cap
Capping a roof, when shingling, is the final step in the roofing process. The cap serves to seal the ridge or hips of the roof where the shingles come together from either side. We install only factory cut cap accessories made specifically for the architectural shingles we are installing. Most companies will attempt to reduce costs by fabricating cap on site out of cheaper grade three-tab shingles. This method is not recommended when installing an architectural roof system. Not only is there a risk of color variation, three-tab shingles carry less of warranty than architectural shingles and will expire much sooner than the rest of you roof.
Clean up and Disposal
We pride ourselves with a clean worksite. All debris is hauled to the recycling facility using our own dump equipment. We do not burden our customers with third party dumpster companies. We use high powered earth magnets to assure all nails are removed from the yard - the premises will be left in broom clean condition.
