Asphalt rolled roofing was once one of the more popular roofing materials used in the low sloped roofing market. This type of roofing has its benefits as well as drawbacks. Here are a few of the pro's and con's when considering asphalt rolled roofing.

Pro's of Asphalt Rolled Roofing

Cost: One of the more appealing things about this type of material is it is not that expensive. If you are trying to work within a budget asphalt rolled roofing is your cheapest option.

Installation: Under perfect conditions, asphalt rolled roofing is one of the easier roofs to install.

Con's of Asphalt Rolled Roofing

Short life expectancy: The greatest downfall with this type of roofing is it does not have a very long life expectancy compared to rubber and PVC membranes. The average life for asphalt rolled roofing is 10 years, and then you will have to replace it.

Maintenance: Since this product is rolled out and adhered at the seams, issues can often happen where the rolls join or at flashed areas. Even with the best installation, annual inspection and maintenance is required to get the most life out of this type of roof.

TPO / PVC

TPO and PVC roofs are lightweight, single ply, white membrane roofs. The seams are either heat welded, glued or self-adhered. These white membranes are energy efficient and will meet ENERGY STAR reflectivity standards when installed and maintained.
